On September 7, 2011, the Animal Care Center at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park welcomed its very first lowland paca baby to be hand raised. His name is Poco, which means “little” in Spanish. Pacas are large rodents found in tropical and subtropical America, from east-central Mexico to northern Argentina. They look a bit like a striped watermelon with legs! Poco arrived at the Center weighing in at 2.3 pounds (1.03 kilograms). Adult pacas weigh between 13 and 27 pounds (6 and 12 kilograms).

Poco received bottle feedings four times a day of a formula that mimics his mom’s milk. From Day 1 he also was eating solids, and he enjoys almonds, figs, and green bell peppers. His favorite food is oranges.

Pacas are mostly nocturnal and solitary, and they live in forested habitats near water, preferably smaller rivers. It is hoped that Poco may one day be an animal ambassador for his species. Right now, he can be seen daily in the Animal Care Center. His living space is decorated with lots of foliage and enrichment. Come watch as he munches on his fresh greens and vegetables.
